The Food of Harmony, Tangpyeongchae

The Food of Harmony, Tangpyeongchae

Do you know this colorful food?

Its name is 'Tangpyeongchae'!

Seemingly, It is just "Food" but It has value of "Harmony."

It was made by King Yeong-jo, the 21st king of Josun Dynasty.

At that time in Josun, there were 4 parties - Buk-in, Nam-in, Dong-in, Seo-in - being antagonistic to each other.

King Yeong-jo realized necessity of concord between the parties to govern the country peacefully.

So he carried out a Tangpyeong policy emphasizing balanced appointment from each parties.

The food Tangpyeongchae was a part of policy.

Tangpyeongchae is the food eating evenly mixed 4 ingredients.

These are 4 ingrdients.

Black, roasted laver, represents Buk-in.

Red, fried beef, represents Nam-in.

Blue, dropwort, represents Dong-in.

White, mung-bean jelly, represents Seo-in.

Just as 4 ingredients are mixed together and make one flavor and color, Tangpyeongchae was King Yeong-jo's effort to achieve the peace in politics.

# How to make it?

The korean traditional clothes : Hanbok

The korean traditional clothes : Hanbok

Hanbok is the traditional dress of Korea. Its straight lines and slight curves are beautiful and harmony, especially women's clothes have various designs and they're really colorful.
Basically, men's consist of jeogori which is like shirts and pants, and women's consist of jeogori and skirt. And when they go out, men wore Durumagi and women wore Jangot or Sseugaechima.
<Durumagi>

연소답청(年少踏靑)
The woman in the picture (Shin Yun-bok, 年少踏靑) wears Jangot.

월하정인(月下情人)
The woman in the picture (Shin Yun-bok, 月下情人) wears Sseugaechima.

Jangot and Sseugaechima looks similar, but they're different clothes. Jangot was the clothes which ordinary people wear and Sseugaechima was for the upper classes woman. Because of the social atmosphere due to the Confucian, woman have to wear these when they go out. However, over times, these clothes's distinction was disappeared, and women can go around without these.

Nowdays, people wear it in traditional holiday, such as New Year's Day or Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day). So when people see someone who wears Hanbok in usual day, they think that he or she has something special or see them strange. But, recently, improved Hanbok for easy to living has produced a lot, as well as colorful clothes. They feel comfortable to wear and look also good.

I think people's perception will be better .

A Well-known Korean Folk Play : Neolttwigi (Korean seesaw)

A well-known Korean folk play : Neolttwigi

(Korean seesaw)

Jumping game similar to see-sawing

Neolttwigi is one of the famous Korean folk play. The people who do not kow well about Neolttwigi can understand the play easily if they come up with seesaw. Neolttwigi is jumping game similar to seesaw so it doesn't matter to name it seesaw. If you visit Korean folk village, you're be able to find seesaw performance which is played around the audience. You will see two of the men who are skilled with high technic jump high up into the air. Let's find out all the things about seesaw which is attractive and splendid folk play of Korea.

<What is Neolttwigi (seesaw) & How to play>
Seesaw is Korean representative folk play and played by women on New Year's day of Dano, like famous holidays. It is easy to understand how to play but it's not just simple performance to all the people. First, roll up the straw mat and put it under the central plank. And then, two people stand respectively at both ends of the plank. If a person on the one side of plank jumps to the height of the sky, the other person of the opposite also jumps high with the same speed. It is the play that two people take run by turns and it's repeated constantly.

널뛰기 [13-7]
<Origin>
There is no apparent and doubtless orign of seesaw but it has been reported ; women played active and vigorous actions of exercise in Koryo Dynasty, considering it, Seesawimg may be started in Koryo Dynasty. Because the ancient women had confined life in a fenced-in place, they felt keenly the necessity of seeing the out of the world through jumping high.

Seeing fancy performance, we may feel and find the same thing with circus. If you see the person who is dexterous in performing seesaw and enjoy that powerful and active performance, you can also get nice feeling from seesawing.

korea's traditional Confucianism Culture !

korea's traditional  Confucianism Culture !

korea's  lifestyle has a lot to do with confucianism culture
for example,  early morning  childrens had  to go to parent's room and say "good morning" to their parents.

and there are term 'Bulgamhwesang' . It means  childrens have to take care of themselves well for their parents,
also, 'ipsinyangmyeong' means that children succeed and  promulgate their own names to world

In the past, most  koreans consisted of big family because of impact on confucianism culture.
and  because our blood relation is deep seated to koreans mind , parents  sacrifice their lives for childrens  education and success and so on.

However,  nowadays koreans strengten self-centeredness  a lot.
because of these sense alterations,  old generations and new generations evoke a collsion of sentiments.
so in the days of diversity, our mission is to try to understand each other and acknowledge other  values.
